Retire in Bellingham

Meet John and Rose Ann

Want to know what it's like to retire in Bellingham?

I am recently retired, in my 60's, after a long professional career in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas area.  My wife also retired from her career in the medical field when we relocated to Bellingham in the summer of 2014.

So John and Rose Ann, what about Bellingham initially appealed to you?

The initial appeal of the Bellingham area was the amazing scenery and the mild gentle climate.  We were also impressed with the quality of life here and the community appreciation for the abundance of outdoor activities.  I find the locals very receptive to recent retirees, especially when they learn we moved 2000 miles to live here.

What is an aspect of the area that you, or other retirees may dislike?

The only negatives in my opinion would be the relatively high cost of residential real estate, and the assumption that anyone who chooses to live here already embraces consistent Liberal political views.

What is an aspect of your daily life in the area that you weren't expecting before you moved?

The reality that we can access so many services and activities on foot vs. driving everywhere.  Some weeks we put more miles on our waling shoes than on our vehicles.

If you ever left Bellingham, what would you miss the most?

I would miss most the clean fresh air, the cool mild climate, and the incredible views from the Bay.

What advice would you have for people moving to this community?

Bring money if you plan to buy a home! Also, expect real seasons of the year and anticipate an overall slower pace of life than is found in much of America today.
