Retire in Columbia

Meet General George Goldsmith

Want to know what it's like to retire in Columbia?

I retired from the South Carolina Technical Education System as President of Beaufort Technical College, Beaufort, SC and the United States Army Reserve. I then moved to Columbia, SC to be closer to family, and am currently involved with the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and serve as the Chairman of the Military Affairs Committee.

So General George Goldsmith, what about Columbia initially appealed to you?

Columbia is centrally located and within two hours of the mountains or the beaches of SC. Columbia is a very aggressive and rapidly growing city which offers great sporting opportunities, arts and entertainment, and restaurants. It is also the home Fort Jackson.

What is an aspect of the area that you, or other retirees may dislike?

Columbia is noted to be “famously hot”.

What is an aspect of your daily life in the area that you weren't expecting before you moved?

The convenience of the lakes and water recreation in the area.

If you ever left Columbia, what would you miss the most?

Being retired from the USAR, I would miss the military amenities at Fort Jackson.

What advice would you have for people moving to this community?

For military personnel, it is the most “Military Friendly Community in the Nation”. Columbia offers many opportunities for one to be involved in the community.
