Retire in Grand Rapids

Meet Jan/Tom

Want to know what it's like to retire in Grand Rapids?

We retired here from the Detroit area three years ago. Tom worked in the automotive industry, and I am a former RN and stay-at-home mom. We moved from a large suburban house to a substantially smaller condo in a high-rise in downtown Grand Rapids.

So Jan/Tom, what about Grand Rapids initially appealed to you?

The thriving downtown - it's restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, museums, and the cultural and entertainment opportunities at our door step. Also, there are excellent medical facilities.

What is an aspect of the area that you, or other retirees may dislike?

The downtown needs more retail, especially a grocery store and a pharmacy. Like any urban setting, there are a number of homeless people.

What is an aspect of your daily life in the area that you weren't expecting before you moved?

So many cultural, intellectual and entertainment opportunities available within a five minute walk from our condo.

If you ever left Grand Rapids, what would you miss the most?

The many friends we've met in the community.

What advice would you have for people moving to this community?

Move downtown! Get active, stay engaged, and continue to be a lifelong learner.
